It is a testament to his stoicism, and to his love of music, that he could even contemplate embarking on a recording project, let alone embue it with a combination of relaxed enjoyment and steely determination. As always, his splendid solos sound like nobody else's. Before a Word Is Said. Recorded in April and May 1981, this album contains some of Alan Gowen's last sessions he died in 1982. Different in many ways than the core corpus of the Canterbury progressive rock movement Soft Machine, Caravan, National Health, this quartet album moves deeper into jazz - jazz by rock musicians, yet not blatantly jazz-rock. Recorded in April and May 1981, this is amoungst the last session by the great Alan Gowen who died in 1982. Along with Richard Sinclair on Bass a genuine member of the so-called Canterbury scene that arose out of The Wilde Flowers and spawned Caravan and Soft Machine but also influenced a range of bands including National Health etc. The Quartet is completed by drummer Trevor Tomkin who brings a light free jazz touch. For Gowen this is a continuation of the themes that he explored the the wonderful Two Rainbows Daily with Hugh Hopper. Before A Word Is Said, a musical testimony by Alan Gowen, almost totally unknown at the time of its release like the albums he recorded as a duo with Hugh Hopper. Well Hopper isn't featured on this album, instead Richard Sinclair plays bass and also does some vocals. I've always thought of Hopper as a far better composer than bass-player, on Sinclairs case it's almost the opposite. This album is maybe the best album Gowen ever made on his too short career
