After the popular New Orleans trumpeterbandleader Oscar Papa Celestin passed away in 1954, his band was fronted by banjoist Albert French. The ensemble recorded several albums in the 1950s under the late Celestin's name but finally in 1965 it was decided that French who by then was also nicknamed Papa should have his name on top since half of the musicians in the band had never actually played with Celestin. He was a banjo player in the Original Tuxedo Brass Band of New Orleans. This band was founded in 1910 and led for 44 years by Papa Celestin. After the death of Papa Celestin in 1954, leadership was briefly taken over by trombonist Eddie Pierson until his death in 1958.
