Like the piano concerto, the Gaelic Symphony is worth listening to 2 or 3 times at least to acquire familiarity. I was immediately struck by Beach's command of instrumentation and orchestral structure. It is one thing to have a massive orchestra on stage, quite another thing to know how to use the vast range of instruments including tuba, bass trombone and bass clarinet. That sort of structure gives an enormous - well, depth, really - to the sound and texture of an orchestra, provided the composer know how and when to unleash them. which Beach does.
