Review by James Leonard. Anne Queffélec brings plenty of style and sass to her 1988 disc of piano works by Erik Satie. With clear tone, brilliant technique, and a preference for clean textures, the Parisian pianist might not seem like everybody's first choice to play the sui generis composer's highly individualistic - some might say highly eccentric - piano music. Though Queffélec remains true to herself, she finds a way to accommodate to Satie. She received her initial training at the Paris Conservatoire with Lélia Gousseau premier prix in piano, 1965 and Jan Hubeau premier prix in chamber music performance, 1966. Manière de commencement Assez modérément - Un peu plus vif. Sports et divertissements Sports and Pastimes is a cycle of 21 short piano pieces composed in 1914 by Erik Satie. The set consists of a prefatory chorale and 20 musical vignettes depicting various sports and leisure activities. First published in 1923, it has long been considered one of his finest achievements. Musically it represents the peak of Satie's humoristic piano suites 1912-1915, but stands apart from that series in its fusion of several different art forms. Sports originally appeared as. Eric Satie: Piano Works - this was Anne Queffélec's second release on Virgin Classics, with mostly solo piano music by Satie but also including two pieces, Trois morceaux en forme de poire, and La Belle Excentrique, where Queffélec has been joined by her frequent performing partner Catherine Collard, who unfortunately died of cancer at the young age of 46, in 1993. The final listings, which include both the Trois Gymnopédies, and Six Gnossiennes, as well as some of the duet recordings with Catherine Collard, would be a good way to get a representative collection of Queffélec's performances on one CD.
