Cecil Armstrong Gibbs 10 August 1889 12 May 1960 was a prolific and versatile English composer, best known for his output of songs. Four Songs for a Mad Sea Captain, for voice & piano, Op. Hidden Treasure. Cecil Armstrong Gibbs. Geraldine McGreevy, Stephen Varcoe. These 36 songs offer a most attractive cross-section, including 10 that set verse by his favourite poet, Walter de la Mare, a close friend whose feeling for fantasy in a child-like world chimed well with the composer's style. Such a lively song as Five Eyes is nicely contrasted here with more hauntingly poetic inspirations such as Silver. Geraldine McGreevy and Stephen Varcoe are persuasive advocates, even though Varcoe has moments of roughness. Roger Vignoles is the ideal accompanist, adding to the atmosphere of each song. Armstrong Gibbs now joins the pantheon of composers allotted their own collection on Hyperion. The songs stand in the lyric tradition of Michael Head. Gibbs' taste in poetry is reflected in this selection. She is clear as a bell for the most part and adds a lusciously fruity tone to Summer Night where she sounds eerily like Janet Baker. She makes an ideal exponent of the summer dew and dripping ecstasy of Take Heed Young Heart. There are often very inventive piano parts in Gibbs writing as in Ann's Cradle Song at the words leap fox hoot owl. Armstrong Gibbs was a prolific English composer whose reputation continues to solidify with new recordings and performances of his music. A composer, adjudicator and conductor who studied under Sir Adrian Boult and Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gibbs was a contemporary of Sir Arthur Bliss, Herbert Howells and Sir Arnold Bax. Achieving renown for his solo songs, Armstrong Gibbs also wrote music for the stage, sacred works, three symphonies and a substantial amount of chamber music. Although a representative sampling has been performed and recorded, much of his music remains unpublished. Gi read more
