Album

The Art Ensemble of Chicago is an avant-garde jazz group that grew out of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians AACM in the late 1960s. The ensemble integrates many jazz styles and plays many instruments, including little instruments: bells, bicycle horns, birthday party noisemakers, wind chimes, and various forms of percussion. The musicians wear costumes and face paint while performing. These characteristics combine to make the ensemble's performances both aural and visual. In albums like The Alternate Express, a sense of grab bag makes itself felt somewhat uncomfortably. In this case you have a moody blues by Lester Bowie, a somber dirge by Roscoe Mitchell very reminiscent of some prior Anthony Braxton compositions in its soft darkness, and the obligatory collective improvisation featuring percussion and little instruments. Not that these are bad or boring performances. Listen album. Art Ensemble Of Chicago. Songs in album Art Ensemble Of Chicago - The Alternate Expess 1989. Art Ensemble Of Chicago - Whatever Happens. The Art Ensemble never liked playing at places like the Five Spot, and its entry that evening was a way of sending up the institution of jazz clubs, which tended to give high black culture low-budget treatment. The ensemble was a quintet throughout its classic era, and the current version 17 people on the album is the largest in its history. The expanded format helps empower Mr. Mitchell, who has become a significant composer of chamber music in his own right, even if it alters some of the Art Ensembles old sonic identity. Kevin Whitehead, NPR. liclon It's weird to hear them with out Lester Bowie's trumpet. But this is great album. They are true masters. Favorite track: Wind and Drum
