Artie Shaw born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky in New York City grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where his natural introversion was deepened by local antisemitism according to Shaw's autobiography. Returning to New York, he became a session musician through the early 1930s. The song was published in 1928. The song was performed by Lawrence Tibbett and Grace Moore in New Moon, the 1930 film adaptation of The New Moon. It was first recorded by Victor Arden-Phil Ohman and Their Orchestra in 1929. Artie Shaw and His Orchestra released it on the album Artie Shaw Plays an Album of Popular Music in 1939.
