Vultures is the debut album by the British-Canadian supergroup AxeWound, released on 2 October 2012. The first song, Post Apocalyptic Party, was released on 1 May 2012, when group founder Matt Tuck unveiled the group, which along with the Bullet for My Valentine frontman features Cancer Bats vocalist Liam Cormier, former Glamour of the Kill guitarist Mike Kingswood, ex-Rise to Remain bassist Joe Copcutt and Pitchshifter drummer Jason Bowld. Vultures' is 10 tracks of thrashy, razor-sharp riffery, with vocals that are screamy where they need to be and growly when they need to be. The overall mood is nastier than a hungry Rottweiler. It doesn't straddle any lines or flounder in the middle of the road. These songs are so metal, they excrete liquid steel. There's not much in the way of humor on the album, but that's okay. What it lacks in lightheartedness it makes up for in sheer aggression. Besides, did we really need another album of snarkily titled songs which have nothing to do with the lyrical subject ma. Some heads down thrashers, such as the title track and a particularly vehement Victim Of The System, rely favorably on Cormiers vicious bellowing and some instrumental violence which hits welcomly hard. Ultimately, Vultures as a whole seems to have been made to appeal more to Bullet For My Valentine fans than to be an actual melding of ideas. The majority of the songs here are painfully by numbers, and just so bewilderingly transparent we wonder how a band of such accomplished musicians perceived this material to be good enough.
