This collection of older songs by the Band of Oz is one seriously enjoyable record - in fact, that's the only thing that is serious about it. But that's not really a surprise, as this group has been delighting audiences along the Atlantic seaboard mostly in the Carolinas since 1967 they're experts at making good-time music, and to judge from the results here they're also good at getting their sound down on record. Starting in the mid-1960s with high school students, the band turned professional in the early-1970s with a core group mostly from the Greenville, North Carolina Rose High School Stage Band, that featured Chuck French on trumpet, Gary Warren saxophone, Randy Hignite keyboards, Jim Heidenreich drums, Johnnie Byrd bass, Buddy Johnson vocals and Keith Houston guitar. In 1971 Billy Bazemore replaced Johnson. They are only the early years for the Band of Oz, my very favorite beach band. Nearly all of these tracks is available on the album, Keep Keepin' It Up, which may be out of print. I originally bought it in 1982 and later got it on CD. I play these tracks regularly on my online beach music station Wave-DB dot com Listen to it for a great run through of beach music. I didn't notice if Hot Fun in the Summertime was on or not.
