Robert Hicks, better known as Barbecue Bob September 11, 1902 October 21, 1931, was an early American Piedmont blues musician. His nickname was derived from his working as a cook in a barbecue restaurant. One of the two extant photographs of him show him playing a guitar and wearing a full-length white apron and cook's hat. Hicks was born in Walnut Grove, Georgia. His parents, Charlie and Mary Hicks, were farmers. He and his brother, Charlie Hicks, together with Curley Weaver, were taught how to. Barbecue Bob. Atlanta's Robert Barbecue Bob Hicks recorded some 65 sides between 1927 and his death in 1931, an interesting mix of modal country blues that is as fine as any tracked by a country blues artist in the era, although he seldom gets the same attention afforded the Mississippi Delta players of the period. This double-disc set has all the essentials, although it may be more than the casual listener really needs, since like most blues players of the day, Hicks wasn't about to change what worked. Still, his modal approach sets him apart, and his guitar playing is vastly underrat. 00:00 Mississippi Heavy Water Blues Barbecue Bob 03:03 Motherless Chiles Blues Barbecue Bob 06:19 Barbecue Blues . 40 Ease It To Me Blues Barbecue Bob 53:40 I'm On My Way Down Home Barbecue Bob , Neillie Florence. Barbecue Bob Robert Hicks, Walnut Grove, Georgia, September 11, 1902 Lithonia, Georgia, October 21, 1931 was an American Piedmont blues musician. He used a bottleneck regularly on his 12-string guitar, playing in an elemental style that relied on an open Spanish tuning reminiscent of Charley Patton. He had a strong voice that he embellished with growling and falsetto, and a percussive singing style. His nickname came from the fact that he was a cook in a barbecue restaurant.
