Album
The String Quartet No. 1 in A minor by Béla Bartók was completed in 1909. The score is dated January 27 of that year. It is one of six string quartets by Bartok. The work is in three movements, played without breaks between each: Lento. Allegretto sometimes referred to as Poco a poco accelerando all'allegretto Introduzione. Allegro vivace. The work was at least in part inspired by Bartók's unrequited love for the violinist Stefi Geyer - in a letter to her, he called the first movement a funeral. Bartok: Complete String Quartets. The six string quartets of Béla Bartók, widely held to be the most important quartets since Beethoven, constitute one of the great monuments of twentieth-century music. This outstanding new volume brings together the first two of Bartók's chamber masterpieces. The stirring first quartet, written in 1908, captures the composer's great stylistic rebirth, as the intense Romanticism of the opening movement gives way to a propulsive finale that reflects the composer's growing interest in Hungarian folk music.
