In recent times Claudio Arrau has very much gone up in my estimation as a Beethoven interpreter, especially in the sonatas. I was in the audience at the Brighton Dome in about 1970 when he played two of his favourites, the Appassionata and Les Adieux. I had learnt the former and had recently played it for a private club I belonged to in my 20s on a Bluthner grand in another part of the Royal Pavilion. At the time Arrau's interpretations struck me as fairly unremarkable as he takes his time with the music. Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his 32 piano sonatas between 1795 and 1822. Although originally not intended to be a meaningful whole, as a set they compose one of the most important collections of works in the history of music.
