Daniel Daniil Shafran 1923-1997 was a Russian cellist who was not well known in the West. He evidently performed only once or twice in London, and never in the USA. We only get the five canonical sonatas, so the timings are rather short: CD 1: TT 46:11 for the two Opus 5 works CD 2: TT 62:50 for Opus 69 and the two works of Opus 102. Especially considering the reasonable prices for this offering, you definitely cannot go wrong adding Shafran to your other favorite cellists who are playing the Beethoven cello works. Read more. The Sonatas for cello and piano No. 4 in C major, Op. 102, No. 1, and No. 5 in D major, Op. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven were composed simultaneously in 1815 and published, by Simrock, in 1817 or early 1818 with a dedication to the Countess Marie von Erdődy, a close friend and confidante of Beethoven. The two sonatas were composed between May and December 1815. A first copy by Beethovens copyist Wenzel Rampl was made in late 1815 but was then subject to further alterations by Beethoven. Beethoven wrote five sonatas for cello and piano: Sonata in F major no. 1, op. Hence, in the beginning of 1796 he composes the Sonatas for cello and piano, op. 5, in Berlin, which have a distinct succession as such: the first movement is slow, followed by two more rapid movements, where the cello is treated like an equal instrument with the piano. Sonata in A major no. 3, op. 69, dedicated to baron Gleichenstein and composed in 1808, is the most popular and at the same time the most loved cello sonata of the composers work. This is explainable through the diversity of the thematic material and the improvisational character of the themes. Sonata for Cello and Piano no. 1 in F major, op. 5 no. Adagio sostenuto, II.
