Beethoven: String Trios Complete. In the Beethoven chamber music sweepstakes, the String Trios usually come in next to last. First, of course, are the string quartets. Then come the violin and cello sonatas and the piano trios. Then come the horn sonata and the string quintet and the wind quintet, the clarinet trio, and the octet. And, finally, just before the Duet for Two Obbligato Eyeglasses come the string trios. The pre-eminent reason for their neglect is their relative youth. Regarding opus 9, Beethoven considered these three string trios his best works at the time. They surely points forward to his late quartets. This recording is excellent in my view, dynamic, energetic, with a perfect balance between the instruments. The Grumiaux Trio recordings of either Beethoven, Mozart, or Schubert are still probably the best out there for this particular combination of violin, viola and cello. One of my great heros of the violin, Arthur Grumiaux always played with absolute impeccable style and grace, perfect for Viennese Classic Era composers although most of his other recordings, usually on Philips, are also consistantly terrific. He published them in Vienna in 1799, with a dedication to his patron Count Johann Georg von Browne 17671827. They were first performed by the violinist Ignaz Schuppanzigh with two colleagues from his string quartet. According to the violinist and conductor Angus Watson, these were probably Franz Weiss on viola and either Nikolaus Kraft or his father Anton on cello. Each of the trios consists of four movements.
