The Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90, commonly known as the Italian, is an orchestral symphony written by German composer Felix Mendelssohn. The work has its origins as had the composer's Scottish 3rd Symphony and The Hebrides overture in the tour of Europe which occupied Mendelssohn from 1829 to 1831. Its inspiration is the colour and atmosphere of Italy, where Mendelssohn made sketches but left the work incomplete. Sir Colin Davis's first recording of Beethoven's Fifth, from 1974 with the BBC Symphony, differs from his more spacious later Dresden Recording but it's no less valid. In general, this is a more straight-ahead, energetic interpretation, an impression heightened by the absence of the first movement exposition repeat. Superior playing by the Boston Symphony, evident in the delicious solo winds, especially in the Presto finale, the full, warm strings, and refined ensemble. 4 in A major 'Italian', Op. 90: Allegro vivace. 90: Andante con moto. 90: Con moto moderato. Charles Hazlewood and the BBC Concert Orchestra explore the history and workings of Mendelssohn's popular 4th Symphony - the Italian. Charles discusses Mendelssohn's struggle between two artistic ideals - using music to express the poetic and extra-musical, and creating a taut, pure symphonic construction that would be deemed worthy of a successor to Beethoven. Mendelssohn never managed to fully reconcile the two and he remained dissatisfied with his symphony. He withdrew it and it was never published in his lifetime but that didn&apos. 5 in C minor of Ludwig van Beethoven, Op. 67, was written between 1804 and 1808. It is one of the best-known compositions in classical music and one of the most frequently played symphonies, and it is widely considered one of the cornerstones of western music. First performed in Vienna's Theater an der Wien in 1808, the work achieved its prodigious reputation soon afterward. Hoffmann described the symphony as one of the most important works of the time.
