The Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36, is a symphony in four movements written by Ludwig van Beethoven between 1801 and 1802. The work is dedicated to Karl Alois, Prince Lichnowsky. Beethoven's Second Symphony was mostly written during Beethoven's stay at Heiligenstadt in 1802, at a time when his deafness was becoming more pronounced and he began to realize that it might be incurable. The work was premiered in the Theater an der Wien in Vienna on 5 April 1803, and was conducted by the composer. Pierre Monteux conductor. Overture to King Stephen, Op. Pierre Monteux has the most musical and expressive Beethoven symphone 5 in my collection. It stands at 1 amongst my other 5 copies by famous conductors and orchestra. This performance blew me away. My whole body was dancing with the rhythm, and melodies synchronized with my humming. It led me to explore more of maestro's other work. Glad to find his Beethoven symphony 9, which also tops my collection of more than 20. Read more. Symphonies 1,3,6 and 8 were with the Vienna Philharmonic 2,4,5 and 7 with the London Symphony. All were released on LP by RCA in the early 1960s. I remember having 6 Pastoral on a London Treasury LP in 1973.
