Gulag Orkestar is the debut album of Beirut. It was recorded in 2005 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Gulag was a Soviet government agency administering forced labor camps, while orkestar is the Serbo-Croatian word for orchestra. It is written in the booklet that the front and back photos were found in a library in Leipzig, torn out of a book. The original photographer was unknown to the creators of the album while it was recorded, but has since been discovered to be Sergey Chilikov. However, Gulag Orkestar does fall flat in a few places. Postcards From Italy doesnt quite nail the laid-back, lazy feeling it tries to produce, most likely due to Condons constant vibrato towards the end of his words. Bratislava takes a familiar march pattern and adds echoing vocals far in the background, but in the end is too repetitive and boring to really feel like it builds from intro to climax. Pop music has almost certainly never sounded more bizarre than it does in Gulag Orkestar, but it has also never sounded quite this good.
