Becoming a trio for their third album, MIND THE DRIFT, has only given the burly band more weapons to play with. Opener Found Art rumbles with a cascade of drums like an army coming over a hillside before some of singer Jared Warrens most melodic vocals soar in. Warren and drummer Coady Willis have both been performing as part of legendary sludge-rockers the Melvins, and the extra work has honed their chops, resulting in very tight songs with more sophisticated structures. Instead, Mind the Drift is an exercise in gimmickry and imitation the post-somethings have invaded, and it seems that the Big Business trio feels a reprehensible need to co-exist. Gone is singer Jared Allen's rough edge and bassist Coady Willis' aggression, in favor of vomit-inducing clean vocals and spacey, melodic, progressive noodling. Explosive and just complex enough to pull off excellent drum-and-bass driven sludge as a duo, Allen, Willis, and Kasai have none of the songwriting skills or progressive acumen to pull of their goal as a trio. They released their first two full length albums in 2005 Head For The Shallow and in 2007 Here Come the Waterworks. At the time of the 2009 Mind the Drift release, producerengineer extraordinaire Toshi Kasai Willie Nelson, Foo Fighters had been playing guitar with Big Business for a while. And in the months before the record was made, Jared and Coady had been touring pretty heavily with the Melvin.
