Bill O'Connell's hard-driving, upbeat aggregation pays tribute to its hometown of Chicago with That Toddlin' Town, his sixth album and fifth for his own Blue Birdland label. Playing a mix of standards and originals put together by a group of outstanding arrangers and composers including O'Connell's favorite, Sammy Nestico, this session presents over an hour of exciting big-band music. Most of the material is upbeat, and not much time is spent on ballads. One notable and pretty exception is How Do You Keep the Music Playing, with vocalizing by Byron Woods.
