An Innocent Man is the ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, released on August 8, 1983. The concept album is a tribute to the American popular music of Joel's adolescent years with Joel paying homage to a number of different and popular American musical styles from the late 1950s and early 1960s, most notably doo-wop and soul music. The album cover artwork was taken on the front steps of 142 Mercer Street, just north of the intersection of Mercer and Prince Street in the SoHo. Billy Joel - An Innocent Man 1983. Recording The Nylon Curtain exhausted Billy Joel, and even though it had a pair of major hits, it didn't rival its predecessors in terms of sales. Since he labored so hard at the record, he decided it was time for a break - it was time to record an album just for fun. And that's how his homage to pre-Beatles pop, An Innocent Man, was conceived: it was designed as a breezy romp through the music of his childhood. An Innocent Man by Billy Joel from his Essential Billy Joel the Album: An Innocent Man. Release Date: August 8, 1983. Some people stay far away from the door If theres a chance of it opening up They hear a voice in the hall outside And hope that it just passes by. Some people live with the fear of a touch And the anger of having been a fool They will not listen to anyone So nobody tells them a lie. I know youre only protecting yourself I know youre thinking of somebody else Someone who hurt you But Im not above Making up for the love Youve been denying you could ever feel Im not above doing anything To restore your faith if I can Some people. Unlike that record, An Innocent Man sounds like the real thing, or at least a real celebration of it. Without missing a bomp, Joel manages to swing from the Wilson PickettJames Brown and the Famous Flames-type raunch of Easy Money to the overdubbed Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers-style acapella of The Longest Time to, most uncanny of all, a perfectly realized mimicry of the Four Seasons unfathomable falsetto pop-soul, entitled Uptown Girl. The whole An Innocent Man album was done in the style of 1950s and '60s popular music. It was Joel's homage to the '60s-era R&B that he grew up on as well as his own romantic experiences as a teenager. Joel said in 1000 UK 1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Usually I agonize over every note, but this time the songs came pouring out of me. More songs from Billy Joel. More songs inspired by soul music. Lisa from Lake Mary, FlI always thought Billy was singing to a girl that he was in a relationship with who had been raped or abused in the past. She was dealing with PTSD and he was reassuring her that he's not like the guy who had hurt her
