Black Joe Lewis born Tucson, Arizona, United States is an American blues, funk and soul artist influenced by Howlin' Wolf and James Brown. He formed Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears in Austin, Texas in 2007. In March 2009, Esquire listed Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears as one of the Ten Bands Set to Break Out at 2009's SXSW Festival. While working at a pawn shop in Austin, Joe Lewis first picked up the guitar. Shortly thereafter, Joe Lewis immersed himself in the local Red River bluesgarage. Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears remind me of several other artists: Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, along with the J. Geils Band, and even the Black Crowes. Throw in the Gun Club for that Jeffrey Lee Pierce type of wild abandon while we're at it. I hear it. Black Joe Lewis is the real deal. If you don't like dancing all over the house and singing along with a grin from ear to ear then don't buy this. There is no way you can listen to something like this and stay seated. Joe Lewis has a course but deep and soulful set of vocals that fits them like a glove . Boogie Album Version. This major-label debut from Austin-based retro soul man Black Joe Lewis is reminiscent of the '60s R&B albums he so clearly adores, right down to its 30-minute playing time. Only one song breaks the four-minute barrier, with the rest at three and some just over two. Fans of the J. Geils Band's initial handful of releases will recognize the same nuthin' but a house party influences at work here, with perhaps less blues and more high-octane soul shouting. Album 2009 10 Songs. Black Joe Lewis is an American blues, funk and soul artist influenced by Howlin' Wolf and James Brown. In this case, the degrees will be calibrated by your tolerance of yelling the guitar and horn sort of yelling, as well as the vocal sort and your ability to enjoy a hoary old riff played slightly too fast for classical R&B coolth in support of a barely there song. Let's not be coy: energy levels are high and Black Joe's intent is malevolent and his Austin, TX address is unarguable. But attitood ain't every damn thing. More about .
