The Academy of St Martin in the Fields ASMF is an English chamber orchestra, based in London. John Churchill, then Master of Music at the London church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and Neville Marriner later Sir Neville founded the orchestra as The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, a small, conductorless string group. The ASMF gave its first concert on 13 November 1959, in the church after which it was named. In 1988, the orchestra dropped the hyphens from its full name. Bloch: Concerto Grosso, Martin: Petite Symphonie Concertante for Harp, Harpsichord, Piano, and Double String Orchestra. Together with Honegger, Ernest Bloch 1880-1959 and Frank Martin 1890-1974 are the foremost Swiss-born composers of this century. I purchased this album on vinyl in the late 70'searly 80's - an AMAZING performance of an underappreciated work - one of my favorites in a pretty extensive collection of classical records. In fact, this was the recording I always used to test the quality of stereo components, speakers, etc. I have checked online for availability of a CD version from time to time over the years - no dice. The Academy continued to perform at the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and added a short Royal Festival Hall Season as its popularity grew. However, recordings remained at the center of the group's activities, and to date, it has issued more than 500 albums. Its recording schedule often involved more than a dozen albums a year.
