Album
Boom Bip's second album is a combination of lush electronics, live and sampled instruments and a couple of vocal collaborations with Gruff Rhys from Super Furry Animals on The Dos and the Donts and Nina Nastasia on the melodic, etherial closing track. Blue Eyed in the Red Room is a restful wash of clean, simple lines, unfractured beats, and neon-tinted melodies. The songs are multi-phased and elegantly phrased. It was released through Lex Records on March 8, 2005. It features guest appearances from Gruff Rhys and Nina Nastasia. Boom Bip, like many of his peers, has insinuated himself into electronic music by scattered, piecemeal degrees, a process antithetical to indie rock's perception of album-as-ultimate-statement. Many electronic albums seem like mere fodder, blocks of digital marble to be collectively sculpted and re-sculpted. As soon as Boom Bip's first LP for Lex, Seed to Sun, was in the can, it was remixed into two EPs- Morning and a Day and From Left to Right- which were packaged together as Corymb. I'm sure the remixes of Blue Eyed in a Red Room will be profligate and terrific but in this instance, the source material itself is well worth your while. Bryan Hollon, aka Boom Bip, is a producer and musician who experiments with many different genres and has developed a sound of his own. His music is mostly instrumental, but over the course of his career he has collaborated with several vocalists. Boom Bip is also known for the remix work that he has done for many artists on several different record labels. Super Furry Animals' singer Gruff Rhys and underground singersongwriter Nina Nastasia are the album's two vocal guests, and touches like the churning guitar outtro to Do's and Don'ts and the bedsitter guitar balladry of One Eye Round the Warm Corner indicate that Boom Bip has no fear of breaking down genre distinctions. That aim is always an admirable one, and it is especially rewarding on an album as finely made as BLUE EYED IN THE RED ROOM. Blue Eyed In The Red Room. Your Score. 0 out of 10. An agreeably bittersweet album. While not any real cause for concern amongst Boom Bip fans, Blue Eyed in the Red Room is not the masterpiece that they might be hoping for. Read full review. Though comparisons to the Postal Service and M83s newer work are somewhat understandable, the record lacks emotion in a way that makes it better suited for a Volvo commercial or a Starbucks compilation
