Album

Cho-Liang Lin is heard first in the perennial favorite G minor Bruch concerto, with the Chicago Symphony under Leonard Slatkin. The recording dates from 1986 and was made in Chicagos Medinah Temple. Marginally less good is Lins Mendelssohn with Michael Tilson Thomas and the Philharmonia. Lin taped it in Minneapolis with Marriner during AprilMay 1982, and this spectacularly played, arrestingly virtuosic reading is one of Lins best on disc. The big opening movement is strongly episodic, its profusion of ideas requiring all the tonal sensitivity and variety that Lin provides, and the many passages of complex multiple-stopping are pin-sharp and devilishly accurate. III - Allegretto Non Troppo Allegro Molto Vivace. Concerto No. 1 For Violin & Orchestra, Op. Composed By Max Bruch Conductor Leonard Slatkin Orchestra Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I - Vorspiel: Allegro Moderato. The recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto by Nathan Milstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bruno Walter was the first classical long-playing record, and the first 12 LP of any kind, in 1948. The issue marked Columbia Records' move away from the 78 rpm format for classical, and the success of Columbia's format soon forced RCA to follow suit. The recording had already been released as Columbia Masterworks Set M-MM-577 in 1945. The release was not the first LP, since a 10.
