Perfect Pitch Black is the fourth studio album by American rock band Cave In. The album was released on September 13, 2005 through Hydra Head Records, and was the band's final release before going on hiatus in 2006. Cave In later reformed in 2009 and released the EP, Planets of Old. For the band's third studio album, Antenna, the band left Hydra Head Records and signed with major label RCA Records. Strikingly, Perfect Pitch Black succeeds because of- not in spite of- its catchy melodies, infectious riffing, and silk-smooth vocals. The tempos, generally in the mid-to-slow range, give the songs time to develop, allowing them to sink in gradually. Given the obstacles and challenges of their decade-long career, Perfect Pitch Black is a far more rewarding album than Cave In should rightly be capable of producing this late in the game. Perfect Pitch Black tries to combine the best of Cave In on one disc. While it never quite reaches the intensity of the metalcore sound they started out with on Until Your Heart Stops, it still brings some heavy riffs in and the screaming vocals return. While songs like The World is in Your Way, Off to Ruin and Trepanning might not be enough to bring in some of that original fan base that probably left when they dropped the metalcore, it is a more accessible version of a heavier sound combined with the previous styles of progressive and rock. Cave In is an American rock band formed in 1995 in Methuen, Massachusetts. The band was originally formed by vocalist Jay Frechette and vocalistguitarist Stephen Brodsky. They named themselves Cave In as a reference to the Codeine song Cave-In. The initial lineup also included guitarist Adam McGrath, drummer John-Robert Conners, and bassist Justin Matthes. Their first release was a self-titled 7 on Aaron Turner's Hydra Head Records
