Album

Unit Structures is a 1966 studio album by free jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, released by Blue Note Records. Unit Structures was Taylor's first album on Blue Note. He released Conquistador on the label in the same year, with a similar lineup. Jesse Jarnow of Pitchfork described the album as among the most intense of the early free jazz albums. The album was accompanied with an essay written by Cecil Taylor, titled Sound Structure of Subculture Becoming Major BreathNaked Fire Gesture. After several years off records, pianist Cecil Taylor finally had an opportunity to document his music of the mid-'60s on two Blue Note albums the other one was Conquistador. Taylor's high-energy atonalism fit in well with the free jazz of the period but he was actually leading the way rather than being part of a movement. Unit Structures, through its use of two bassists Henry Grimes and Alan Silva and the two-reed front of Ken McIntyre and Taylor-mainstay Jimmy Lyons, suggests a double band. Yet such structures become almost meaningless in Taylor's world: it is all about energy and exploration. Punctuated by percussive bursts and melodic eruptions, Unit Structures is, despite its title, impressionistic and whimsical, although devoid of all standard structures and romance. Instead, Taylor pushes his band to explore the limits of improvisation where nothing-neither form, nor melody, nor struct. Album 1966 5 Songs. Unit Structures. Cecil Taylor. When offering a retrospective of someone so controversial in their mystique as Cecil Taylor, I dont know to whom I speak. Newcomers, occasional dabblers, and long-time disciples alike could bear witness, but every gesture towards Taylor feels like an introduction. The famous liner notes for Unit Structures were idealistic in their poetry, and seemed to ramble. By contrast, Taylors creations were erudite, all the more destructive - and constructive will explain - as the pianist never fell prey to the clout of his own passion.
