Let My Children Hear Music is an album released by Columbia Records in 1972 of music by composer Charles Mingus, produced by Teo Macero. The music is scored for large jazz orchestra and Mingus worked with several arrangers, orchestrators and conductors, most notably Sy Johnson and Alan Raph, to realize some of his most ambitious compositions. In the original liner notes, Mingus described it as the best album I have ever made. The listener will happily put aside all quibbles, however, when the music is heard. From the opening, irresistible swing of The Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jiveass Slippers to the swirling depths of The I of Hurricane Sue, these songs are some of the most glorious, imaginative, and full of life ever recorded. Recent Listening Trend. Here is a tasty big band recording from Charles Mingus, Let My Children Hear Music is an obscure recording in a sense, you sure don't hear it mentioned in any of the Mingus best of lists, Truth is, that list is so long, 5 or 10 usually only scrapes the surface anyway. Charles fucking Mingus. He leads, he succeeds. What a great direction. Attempting the transcendental in fusing jazz and classical together. At the same time laying out an encompassing portfolio of best-kept-secret material. I've never witnessed this level of experimentation in any other big band - the orthodoxy in one's raised-from-jazz canon wouldn't allow it. Obviously Charles could bypass whatever preconceptions might have got in the way. I hear a mature Mingus at peace with himself. I might be tripping but I find this delightful from beginning to end, a balanced mix of big band wonders and experimental atmospheres. Very good. Play jigsaw puzzles for free Home. Charles Mingus.
