Chico Hamilton Foreststorn Hamilton September 21, 1921, Los Angeles - died November 25, 2013 was a jazz musician. He was born in Los Angeles in 1921 and was raised locally as the Central Avenue jazz scene was beginning to coalesce. In the 1940s, he performed with Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. This four-disc, 42-track set collects five of his LPs, 1959s With Strings Attached, Three Faces of Chico, Gongs East, 1962s A Different Journey, and 1980s Nomad in a single box that does a good job of spotlighting Hamiltons joyful jazz, making this a generous introduction to his musical approach. Foreststorn Chico Hamilton, September 20, 1921 November 25, 2013 was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. He came to prominence as sideman for Lester Young, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, and Lena Horne. Hamilton became a bandleader, first with a quintet featuring the cello as a lead instrument, an unusual choice for a jazz band in the 1950s, and subsequently leading bands that performed cool jazz, post bop, and jazz fusion. Chico Hamilton played a wide variety of styles during the course of his career, and this album is a fairly good, but not outstanding, sampling of what he was up to during the mid 60s.
