Chris & Cosey, sometimes known as Carter Tutti, are a musical duo formed in 1981, consisting of couple Chris Carter electronics and Cosey Fanni Tutti electronics, guitar, cornet, both previously members of industrial music pioneers Throbbing Gristle. Since the release of their 1981 debut album Heartbeat, the group have expanded on the rhythmic ideas of Throbbing Gristle while adding synthesized pop elements to their sound. Cosey: 'We actually started work on the first Chris and Cosey album while TG were on their final tour in America, and when that was over we came back to England to finish it. We sent the finished tape to Rough Trade and they put it out on record as Heartbeat. We then made a second album on cassette called Trance, but Rough Trade liked it so much they decided to put it out as a record as well. Both Heartbeat and Trance are examples of well-crafted, swirling industrial collages, though the music they contain is generally more accessible than the majority of TG's output in the ban. The connection in the title to medieval chant lends meaning to the differences on Chris and Cosey's second album here, these dire synth-pop tracks are extended somewhat into unconventional for rock territory that explores the modern-day equivalents of non-Western notions of trance music. It is an interesting concept, although the tracks don't always hold up in a purely entertainment sense. Basically an album of the electronic backing tracks that adorned Throbbing Gristle releases , but without that vital performance aspect,now commonly referred to as the 'X' factor by a certain smug showbiz impresario. Very attractive are the vintage analogue sounds,but its all rather like a bunch of half finished pop songs, waiting for some vocals.
