The Whitey Album is an album by Ciccone Youth, a side project of Sonic Youth members Steve Shelley, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, featuring contributions from MinutemenFirehose member Mike Watt and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. Although it is suggested through only a few songs, the album is somewhat a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Madonna and 1980s pop in general. This would have been a perfect match, with two enormous talents coming together for an entire album. But in reality it is far stranger than that: a highly experimental tribute to Madonna performed by Sonic Youth with the exception of one song that is entirely played by Mike Watt without any other musicians accompanying him. The DGC re-release features a cleaner sound and the original packaging from the 1988 SST version, along with liner notes written by Watt explaining his small role in the project. Album 1988 17 Songs. Making the Nature Scene Ciccone Youth Version. 3: Youth's seventh album sort of originated with a long-running band joke involving SY's claim to one day cover the Beatles' White Album in its entirety - somehow this project morphed into a twisted beatboxsampler experiment masquerading as a tribute to Madonna. SY even took Madonna's surname for their own, calling themselves Ciccone Youth. The Whitey Album CD was reissued by DGC in 1995 w liner notes by Mike Watt.
