Album
Clark Terry led a short-lived big band in the mid-'70s, and the 18-piece orchestra is showcased on this set from the 1974 Wichita Jazz Festival. With arrangements by Ernie Wilkins, Phil Woods, Jimmy Heath, and Allan Foust, the emphasis during this CD reissue is on swinging in a beboppish fashion. However, C. kept an open mind and his performance also has versions of Kenny Dorham's Una Mas and Wayne Shorter's Nefertiti along with some more basic material. Clark Terry's distinctive and highly appealing flugelhorn playing is in excellent form, as he fronts a talented and swinging band how about Phil Woods, Jimmy Heath, Richard Williams, Charles Davis, Duke Jordan and a young Ed Soph, playing excellent arrangements by such as Heath, Ernie Wilkins and Woods. No question that Clark Terry assembled a terrific band back in 1974, when this was recorded, to take on tour throughtout the midwest. Jimmy Heath, Phil Woods, Richard Williams tp, and Duke Jordan p are all first-rate musicians, and the band certainly knows how to wail. The Clark Terry Quintet.
