Billy the Kid is a 1938 ballet written by the American composer Aaron Copland on commission from Lincoln Kirstein. It was choreographed by Eugene Loring for Ballet Caravan. Along with Rodeo and Appalachian Spring, it is one of Copland's most popular and widely performed pieces. It is most famous for its incorporation of several cowboy tunes and American folk songs and, although built around the figure and the exploits of Billy the Kid, is not so much a biography of a notorious but peculiarly appealing. Aaron Copland November 14, 1900 in Brooklyn, New York, United States December 2,1990 was an American composer who achieved a distinctive musical characterization of American themes in an expressive modern style. Copland, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, was born in New York City and attended public schools there. An older sister taught him to play the piano, and by the time he was 15 he had decided to become a composer. As a first step Copland tried to learn harmony through a correspondence course. David Loebel conducts the New England Conservatory Symphony on a performance of Copland's Billy The Kid Suite. This Suite is taken from his 1938 ballet, commissioned by Lincoln Kirstein and choreographed by Eugene Loring for Ballet Caravan. It plays with folk idioms, borrowing actual cowboy tunes and American folk songs. Recorded live in NEC's Jordan Hall November 14, 2012. Copland has always been one of Slatkin's specialties he gets the peculiarly American mix of broadness and subtlety in the composer's music, and his readings of the big ballets are as fine as any on the market. Here you get the complete Billy the Kid, less often heard than the familiar Suite, and containing the solitary Billy in the Desert to match the card game nocturne, both hypnotically done
