Seventeen songs were recorded at Trama Studios São Paulo, of which eleven appear on the album. Donkey follows their critically acclaimed debut album Cansei de Ser Sexy. Three months before the release, bassist Iracema Trevisan left the band, being replaced by then-drummer Adriano Cintra. The new drummer is Englishman Jon Harper, formerly of The Cooper Temple Clause. The albums darkest track, Rat is Dead Rage, rides a surf beat and surges like classic Pixies. Another standout, the synth-driven How I Became Paranoid, balances tightly-wound rhythms and an infectious chorus to create edgy pop. Cansei de Ser Sexy's self-titled first album was a glorious . hash of chunky guitars, cheap synths, and Lovefoxxx's brashly sexy vocals, and its rawness just made it more bracing.
