György Cziffra in Hungarian form Cziffra György 5 November 1921 15 January 1994, also known as Georges Cziffra and George Cziffra, was a Hungarian-French virtuoso pianist and composer. He is considered to be one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. Among his teachers was István Thomán, who was a favourite pupil of Franz Liszt. A remarkable prodigy, Gyorgy Cziffra received tuition from his father, and by the age of five was improvising in public. His family was extremely poor and performances at the local circus benefited the family income. Fortunately, at the age of nine Cziffra entered the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest studying with Ernő Dohnányi. By the age of twelve Cziffra was again performing in public, giving concerts in many of Hungarys principal cities. In 1937 he played in Holland and Scandinavia but was conscripted into the army in the autumn of 1942. His unbearable treatment is chronicled in his autobi. Cziffra died in Senlis, France, 72 years old, from a heart attack resulting from series of complications from lung cancer due to smoking and alcohol. His wife, Soleilka, is of Egyptian origin. His father is György Cziffra Sr. a cimbalom player who played in cabaret halls and restaurants in Paris in the 1910s. His son, György Cziffra, Jr. died 1981 by setting fire to his own Paris apartment was a brilliant pianist but chose to be a conductor instead. Cziffra was so affected by his son's death that from that day on he never performed or recorded with an orchestra again. Browse the top cziffra albums to find new music and discover artists.
