Darsombra reportedly recorded this debut effort, Ecdysis, in a converted Baltimore funeral home, which perhaps explains its overall haunted ambience and brooding sounds. From the start, nebulous, deliberate movements such as Thinning the Herd and The Place Where There Is No Darkness proffer unfathomable combinations of searing industrial foundations, field recordings, and repetitive, wafting waves of dissonance, which leave them sounding like soundtracks to extra-terrestrial invasion. Ecdysis is the first solo album by Japanese musician Miho Hatori. She came to prominence with a series of contributions to diverse bands, including Cibo Matto, Gorillaz, the Beastie Boys, and Smokey & Miho before working entirely as a solo performer. The album was released on October 21, 2005 in Japan under the Speedstar International label. The album was distributed in the United States one year later under the Rykodisc label. Ecdysis 4:26. Judging from the sludge sound projected by Meatjack, Darsombra is precisely what I did not expect to hear from Daniloski. Apparently, he has a dark corner of his brain, which he channeled into sound form for Ecdysis. Let me preface any further description by making it known that this album is going to be difficult for most listeners to grasp.
