David Warren Brubeck ˈbruːbɛk December 6, 1920 December 5, 2012 was an American jazz pianist and composer, considered one of the foremost exponents of cool jazz. Many of his compositions have become jazz standards including In Your Own Sweet Way and The Duke. Brubeck's style ranged from refined to bombastic, reflecting both his mother's classical training and his own improvisational skills. Dave Brubeck assisted Sol and Max Weiss establish Fantasy Records in 1950. These mono recordings have not been rechanneled. This LP features the Dave Brubeck Quartet in its early days. Most of the music is from 1951-1952, and features such short-term sidemen as bassists Norm Bates, Fred Dutton who doubled on bassoon and Wyatt Bull Reuther, drummers Herb Barman and Lloyd Davis, and altoist Paul Desmond.
