Album

David Sylvian & Holger Czukay, Plight & Premonition Full Album Tracklist: 01. Plight The spiralling of Winter Ghosts 0:00 - 18:34 02. Premonition 18: & Premonition is the first of two collaborative albums by English musician David Sylvian and German musician Holger Czukay. It was released in March 1988. Czukay had come to prominence in the 1960s with the experimental rock group Can, while Sylvian's had been the frontman of the UK new wave group Japan. The music on Plight is ambient, making extensive use of 'found sounds' from a variety of non-traditional sources. It consists of two instrumental tracks, both of which are over 15 minutes long. When David Sylvian set about making his first solo album, 1984s Brilliant Trees, he enlisted a handful of former collaborators, including Yellow Magic Orchestra co-founder Ryuichi Sakamoto as well as his Japan bandmates Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri. The most crucial contributions, though, came from an artist with whom he had never worked before: Holger Czukay. Surprisingly, Sylvians interest in the German artists work derived not from the latters tenure in the pioneering krautrock band Can but from his solo albums, particularly his 1979 release Movies. This is dark minimal ambient and quite superb. Disc 2 of 'Gone to Earth' showed that Sylvian was adept at instrumental ambient but this went further into territory almost uninhabited by conventional musical notions at least notions held by the majority of his 'Japan' era fans. The first piece is dark and dessicated, tension ebbs and flows, fragmentary and elusive. The second piece is warmer, less threatening,. This is a collaboration between David Sylvian, frontman for Japan, and Holger Czukay, the bassist for Can. Track Listing. In 1986, David Sylvian and Holger Czukay founding member and bassist in legendary German Kosmiche band Can were ostensibly reconvening for Sylvian to record a vocal for Czukays forthcoming album Rome Remains Rome. But on arriving at Czukays studio a former cinema in Köln Sylvian began playing freeform, improvising on readily available instruments located in the studio itself. No sooner had Sylvian, on whatever instrument hed been applying himself, start to structurally definerefine the performance than Czukay would stop the recording hed surreptitiously been making. He went solo in 1984 with the album Brilliant Trees. Plight and Premonition is an excellent and instantly identifiable album that should be listened to on dark swelteringly hot nights. Entirely instrumental, but unlike its successor - this one is far more atmospheric and has a lot more depth and feel to it. And unlike most collaborations this sounds split 5050 right down the middle in terms of input and resulting sound
