One Day I'm Going to Soar is a 2012 album by Dexys, the band formerly known as Dexys Midnight Runners. It was the band's fourth studio album, but its first in 27 years. The album features, alongside Dexys' lead singer and leader Kevin Rowland, 1980s Dexys members Big Jim Paterson, Pete Williams and Mick Talbot, new recruits Neil Hubbard, Tim Cansfield and Lucy Morgan, and guest vocalist Madeleine Hyland, who duets with Rowland on several songs. In the 27 years since Dexy's Midnight Runners' last studio album, frontman Kevin Rowland has become more renowned for his financial problems, drug addiction, and of course, his bizarre drag makeover on 1999's career-suicide My Beauty than the wondrous blend of blue-eyed soul, post-punk, and folk-pop that he conquered the charts with in the early '80s. Dexys Midnight Runners, as they were known in the 80s, always had a reputation for passion and honesty, but there was an uncomfortable intimacy about the Don't Stand Me Down work which made it their most difficult but gripping record. The passion returns in the comeback more measured than before, at its best when burning slowly on She Got a Wiggle or I'm Thinking of You. Which means that, as with any confessional record, One Day I'm Going to Soar ends up relying on how fascinating you find its lead character. Very few rock stars have ever been as willing to dismantle themselves in song as Kevin Rowland. Kevin Rowland hasn't written mere songs for his Dexys comeback rather a West End musical. To call it a concept album underestimates its high-camp, red-velvet theatricality. The plot: man reflects on youth, and how he was always dreaming of some way that I could be man pants over a beautiful woman she reciprocates their love implodes man concludes, I can't be what anybody wants me to be. Even if it isn't autobiography, the man's heart-on-sleeve individualism and resistance of any attempt to overpigeonary him are pure Rowland. The musi. A quarter-century on from the last Dexys Midnight Runners album Dont Stand Me Down mocked upon release, now recognised as a work of genius, Dexys so named because, says Kevin Rowland, Its the same, but also not the same return. Recent live shows induced collective rapture in audiences. Can the comeback album possibly live up to expectations It can. It certainly can.
