Neil McCormick reports: Gypsy Blood by Doll By Doll is the lost masterpiece of british rock, by the greatest band youve never heard of. First released in 1979, this lush classic of near-psychotic beauty has everything you could ever want from a rock album. A widescreen, windswept epic, featuring layered, micro-detailed arrangements, it sweeps from the tender to the terrifying, often within a few bars. The playing is elegantly syncopated, technically impeccable, darkly dramatic. Doll by Doll were a London-based rock band formed by Jackie Leven in 1977. They came to prominence during the new wave period but were largely ignored by the music press of the time - their emotional, psychedelic-tinged music was judged out of step with other bands of the time. The original line-up was Jackie Leven vocals and guitar, Jo Shaw vocals and guitar, Robin Spreafico vocals and bass, and David Macintosh vocals and percussion. This lineup only recorded one studio album Remember before. The promise evidenced by Doll by Doll's Remember - released earlier in 1979 - is fully realized in Gypsy Blood. Fronted by vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Jackie Leven, with new bassist Tony Waite also the album's producer, Gypsy Blood is a big-sounding record some of its tracks were deeply influenced by the production styles of both Phil Spector and Jack Nitszche. Musically, the soundboard is the same: big drums David McIntosh and guitars Leven and Jo Shaw up front with Leven's astonishing wide-ranging voice soaring over the entire proceedings.
