Carlos Wesley Don Byas October 21, 1912 August 24, 1972 was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, most associated with bebop. He played with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey, and Dizzy Gillespie, among others, and also led his own band. He lived in Europe for the last 26 years of his life. Byas was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Both of Byas' parents were musicians. His mother played the piano, and his father, the clarinet. Byas started his training in classical music, learning to play violin. Don Byas was a tenor-sax genius whose name never appeared in lights as bright as those of Lester Young, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins or Sonny Rollins. Patchy live recordings of decades-old jazz by non-stars rarely qualify for this slot, but these tracks from Stockholm's Nalen club in 1962 are special cases: for his inventiveness, his importance as a 1930s-swing player who got the point of 40s bebop, and for the piano-playing of the shortlived Swedish player Jan Johansson.
