Poor Cow is a 1967 British Kitchen Sink drama directed by Ken Loach and based on Nell Dunn's novel of the same name. It was Ken Loach's first feature film, after a series of TV productions. Set in London, the Winstanley and York Road Estates in Battersea were amongst the locations featured prominently in the background. The title is a cockney expression, with the word cow referring to a woman. The film was re-released in the UK in 2016. Originally titled Poor Love, this was at one point to be part of a Lord of the Rings project that Donovan had written a few songs for, but The Beatles were first in line. Apparently, the book's author J. Tolkien was still alive at the time and didn't want any of his works visualized, so the project was shelved.
