Open Road is the eighth studio album, and ninth overall, from British singer-songwriter Donovan and the debut album from the short-lived band Open Road. While his previous work was composed by his playing solo on acoustic guitar and then recorded with a shifting cast of session musicians, Open Road was Donovan's effort toward writing and recording music as a member of a band. Stripping down to a Celtic rock format that managed to be hard and direct, yet still folkish, Donovan turned out a series of excellent songs, notably the minor hit Riki Tiki Tavi, that seemed to show him moving toward a roots-oriented sound of considerable appeal. How else to explain the lack of interest in such solid material The album begins with a tougher British blues underlying Changes, but Song for John and the modest hit Riki Tiki Tavi are prime Donovan. Aligning himself so closely to the psychedelia of the late 60s, Donovan ran into commercial difficulties as a new decade began. Released in 1970, Open Road is a very good Donovan album at a time when people had started to look elsewhere and his record label was not perfectly aligned with his star. Open Road. Released 1970.
