After three successive LPs exploring his newfound Christian faith, Bob Dylan returned to secular themes with 1983's underrated Infidels, an appealingly bright pop record bolstered by thoughtful, pointed lyrics recalling the urgency of his classic anthems. The two-disc bootleg set Rough Cuts compiles 25 outtakes from the month-long, Mark Knopfler-produced New York City recordings that yielded Infidels, and it's fascinating to hear the evolutions of detours the songs take on their way to completion. The band they have devised for the sessions ranks as one of his most inspired gatherings. The rhythm section is Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. The two-pronged guitar attack is to be provided by Knopfler and ex-Stones axeman Mick Taylor. Keyboardist Alan Clark has been enlisted from Knopflers band. The sessions result in 16 original new songs, 14 cover versions, and a couple of instrumentals copyrighted under the titles, Dark Groove and Dont Fly Unless Its Safe . Rough and Rowdy Ways is the 39th studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on June 19, 2020, through Columbia Records. It is Dylan's first album of original songs since his 2012 album Tempest, following three releases, one a triple album, that covered traditional pop standards. It features contributions from several musicians, including Fiona Apple and Blake Mills. Tracker, his eighth solo album, is quintessential Knopfler. Backed by his longtime solo-career band, which still includes former Dire Straits keyboardist Guy Fletcher, Knopfler sings of a lonesome gravedigger Mighty Bones , a derelict River Towns and a newspaper copy boy, inspired by his own youth Basil to craft moody, mournful, Celtic-inflected arrangements sprinkled with his characteristic spiraling guitar lines. During those tours, Knopfler would often join Dylan and his band for the first four songs of Dylans set, playing along with Tangled Up in Blue, Things Have Changed, and other Dylan songs.
