Earl Bostic was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on April 25, 1913. He died in Rochester, New York, on October 28, 1965. He started on alto sax and clarinet when he attended Booker T. Washington School. He worked with Terrence Holders band 1931-32 and then briefly with Benny Moten early in 1933. He had a number of popular hits such as Flamingo, Harlem Nocturne, Temptation, Sleep, Special Delivery Stomp and Where or When, which all showed off his characteristic growl on the horn. He was a major influence on John Coltrane.
