Earl Kenneth Hines, also known as Earl Fatha Hines December 28, 1903 April 22, 1983, was an American jazz pianist and bandleader. He was one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano and, according to one source, one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz. The trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie a member of Hines's big band, along with Charlie Parker wrote, The piano is the basis of modern harmony. This little guy came out of Chicago, Earl Hines. Pianist Earl Hines had an illustrious career, ranging from his groundbreaking work with Louis Armstrong in the late '20s to some of his grandest of solo piano dates in the '70s. In between, the Pennsylvania native kept busy fronting one of the most sophisticated and popular big bands in the '30s and by later working in a variety of combo settings for club, concert, and studio engagements. Fortunately, Hines enjoyed cutting solo discs, and there are several fine examples in circulation. And, along with two excellent and expansive originals Hunting, Hines '65, Hines offers up some playful vocal turns on If I Could Be With You and Peggy Lee's I Don't Know Enough About You.
