Eddie Palmieri born December 15, 1936 is a Grammy Award-winning pianist, bandleader, musician, and composer of Puerto Rican ancestry. He is the founder of the bands La Perfecta, La Perfecta II, and Harlem River Drive. On the liner notes of their first album, Eddie's brother Charlie dubbed this combination the 'trombanga', referring to the trombones and the still popular charanga which typically featured the flute. The combination helped to give La Perfecta a rich and bold sound which contributed to Palmieri's success with his new band. Mambo con conga es Mozambique Tico, 1965. Other than my ALL TIME favorite Eddie Album AZUCAR, Mozambique is without question his best work. I was fortunate enough to have seen Eddie perform many times in the mid to late 60s in all of the NY venues such as The Village Gate, Manhattan Center, Colgate Gardens, Huntspoint Palace later to become The Bronx Music Palacealong with some of the other Latin greats suce as Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Johnny Pacheco, Joe Cuba Ricardo Ray and. On Palmieri's best albums, he layers several infectious beats on top of each other creating a disorienting wall of sound that gives the music it's fiery, lively edge.
