But ELO's Greatest Hits does a far graver disservice to the Electric Light Orchestra's oeuvre. For some reason, the original vinyl LP sounded somewhat muffled and distant, as if the EQ was perceptibly off. The result is that while this is otherwise a fine survey of Jeff Lynne's most successful - if not necessarily his best - songs, it just doesn't sound very good. Similar compilations. ELO's Greatest Hits is filled with gooey, chewy delights-sonic kitsch like I Can't Get It Out of My Head Lennon on Lithium, Telephone Line Kool & The Gang with violins, and the irresistible Turn to Stone Wagner in spandex-cultural guideposts, whether you want to admit it or not. ELO combined classical elements with electronic rock and their influence can still be heard in new Turk bands playing with Moogs-for all their Beatles-in-space trappings, the group was also pretty damn catchy. All the essential hits are here. The only two complaints I have about this collection is: Why Rockaria instead of Do Ya Do Ya is a hit and Rockaria is not.
