Today is your lucky day. In your hands, an unashamed promotional scam courtesy of Stiff Records. We are trying to sell records and make Elvis a huge star. He is trying to pay off his mortgage. You have been recommended by .......... who was courteous enough to pay the postage. We were gracious enough to pay the album costs. El waived his royalties. So now we've done our bit - you do yours. Clamp your ears around this disc. If you like it spread the word. Play it. Pollute the metropolis. If you don't like it, remember that we know who you are and that we have your address. Elvis Costello was ready to carve out his place in popular music in a mixture of cleverness, flash, venom, craftsmanship and even a stunt or two, if the situation called for it. With My Aim Is True, Costello joined the ranks of New Dylans the music press insisted on crowning every so often. But while Dylan himself could get vicious, Costello wasnt going to rock with quite this much abandon. Yes, it tears through angry, pointed material-from sneering looks at the daily grind Welcome to the Working Week to mocking impossible standards of others Miracle Man . It also mellows on a signature ballad thats tough and tender Alison , and the delectably spare and weirdly noir-ish Watching the Detectives is a mark of songwriting genius. While Costellos lyrics cut like killer short stories, his musical knowledge is only partly displayed here, which makes the melodic brilliance. Costello and Clover reportedly listened to The Clash on repeat while recording My Aim Is True, and it especially shows on the LPs closing track. Here, Clover prove to be one damn versatile band, shifting to a reggae groove with funky-fun keys and jittery guitar riffs. Costello tells the tale of a murder mystery, then on the bouncy chorus the band pair dub grooves with punk ferocity, driving the keys louder and louder, as Costello yells shoot, shoot, shoot 3.
