The Koola Lobitos lineup visited the US in the late 60s and made recordings later released as The '69 Los Angeles Sessions, under the name Nigeria '70, ahead of the prolific period that followed. Around the time of this trip Fela met American black rights activist Sandra Izadore, who introduced him to the Black Panthers and revolutionary writings by Malcom X and Angela Davis that inspired his political thinking and to use his music as weapon. Fela and Allen's musical partnership continued into the 1970s, along with another long-time collaborator, baritone saxophonist. Sessions find Fela & Nigeria '70 fleshing out the sound that would bring him acclaim and popularity. Ensconced in the knowledge of the American black struggle of the time from a female companion in Los Angeles, his approach went from bright and snappy to contemplative and hypnotic without compromising the groove. His lyrical themes became more political in scope as heard in the tune Viva Nigeria, in which he describes the strife of Nigerian civil war. The Koola Lobitos sessions are good but the L. sessions from 1969 are just terrific. The first six songs, recorded from 1964 to 1968, are Fela playing funky Nigerian highlife with his band Koola Lobitos. The degree of evolution between the early Koola Lobitos sides and the '69 sides just a few years later is dramatic. The former could be any highlife band, but the latter are instantly recognizable as Fela despite the uncharacteristically short songs. Read more.
