Behind the Mask is the fifteenth studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, released on 9 April 1990. It was the first album released by the band after the departure of guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. He was replaced by Billy Burnette and Rick Vito, both guitar players, singers and songwriters. Fleetwood Mac thus became a six-piece band with four singersongwriters. The album was not as successful as its predecessor, Tango in the Night, nor did it spawn any big hit singles although Save. Whilst the replacements in both Billy Burnette and Rick Vito didn't exactly mar the band's future career, it sure did change the sound for the worse. Nonetheless, Fleetwood Mac's 15th studio effort had its golden moments, brief as they were. The opening two songs, Skies the Limit and Love is Dangerous both come across as very confident, uplifting pieces of pop rock which, if anything, proved the band still had a little energy left, and the clean, glossy production helped to bring Burnette and Vito's guitar work out of the shadows. On Behind the Mask, the band doesnt surrender an inch of the territory it staked out in the Seventies. This notoriously unstable family keeps its center still for once, using the same slow-push melodies, thudding drums and endlessly repeated refrains. But its the title song that puts Fleetwoods past both on record and in scandal sheets in perspective. It catches McVie still reeling, deciding a trip to the moon isnt worth the gas, because you can make the darkness mean more than it ever did.
